What is End-to-End Encryption?

Data encryption is a security process that scrambles readable data into an unreadable, coded format using mathematical algorithms and a secret key. It ensures that only authorized parties with the correct key can access and understand the information, and protects it from theft, modification or unauthorized access during storage or transit.

A very basic form of encryption you may have encountered in childhood is the Caesar Cipher (or Shift Cipher), where each letter of the alphabet is moved up or down the alphabet by a set number. For example, with a shift of 3, A becomes D, B becomes E, and so on. In this example, "3" is the secret key.​​​​​​​​​​​​​
Web sites today use varying forms of encryption (much more complicated than a Caesar Cipher) to protect your information - but, and this is important - if the site is not end-to-end encrypted, it also has the secret key and can decrypt your information. This introduces vulnerabilities that bad actors can exploit and puts your information at risk.

In reality, the vast majority of web sites are NOT end-to-end encrypted, even many that offer to store your sensitive personal information.
CastleKeyp is end-to-end encrypted.
End-to-End Encryption
The highest level of online security, end-to-end encryption (E2EE) encrypts your information at all points - in transit and at rest - with encryption keys that only you have access to.
CastleKeyp uses end-to-end encryption to protect your information. Except at the "ends" - i.e. when you are seeing your information on your own devices, or when you have permissioned your friends or family members to see it on their devices - your information is encrypted at every point. Only you have the encryption keys.

This means that only you, and the people you specifically choose, can access your data. CastleKeyp cannot access your data, and neither can hackers.

So you can store everything in CastleKeyp from your passwords to your passport, your social security number to your bank accounts, ​with perfect peace of mind.
Uncrackable Encryption Keys Protect Your Information
Your unique encryption keys are derived from your Password (which you create at sign-up, and which only you ever know) and your GateKey (your unique, randomly generated code that is created at sign-up and which only you ever know).

Unless someone has access to both your Password and your GateKey, they can never decrypt the data in your account.
CastleKeyp's servers only ever store your information in fully encrypted form, and CastleKeyp does not have the keys to crack the encryption - only you do. So CastleKeyp cannot see your information.

Even if a hacker tried to access CastleKeyp, they would see only your encrypted information, and they would not have the keys to crack the encryption - only you do. So hackers cannot see your information.

In plain language, this means you can store your most sensitive personal information in CastleKeyp with perfect peace of mind. It's just between you and the people you choose.
Your Role:
Guard Your Password and GateKey
We can't stress this enough:
You MUST NOT LOSE your Password and GateKey. Write them down, and store them somewhere safe, such as with your passport, or in your home safe. You'll thank yourself later.

​CastleKeyp never knows your Password or GateKey, so we cannot help you if you lose them, and you cannot access your account without them. Choose a Password you can remember, AND write it down.
Never share your Password and GateKey with anyone. CastleKeyp will never ask you for them.​​​
